East Valley: Banner Children’s Hospital at Banner Desert Medical Center

Article submitted by: Kerry Hamilton of Banner Health Foundation

Jerry Moyes commits $500,000 to Banner Children’s Hospital through Swift Charities for Children

Swift Transportation CEO Jerry Moyes founded Swift Charities for Children to provide resources and assistance to children throughout the Valley of the Sun. Led by Executive Director Jim Stone, Swift Charities for Children raises money to benefit children’s charities by re-selling gently-worn items that have been collected in donation bins dispersed across metro-Phoenix.

Through Swift Charities for Children, $500,000 has been committed to the Through the Eyes of a Child Capital Campaign to benefit Banner Children’s Hospital at Banner Desert Medical Center.  Mr. Moyes was introduced to the children’s hospital project by his longtime friend, NFL great Steve Young, who serves as an honorary chair of the campaign.

“Our partnership with Banner Health Foundation to support the Banner Children’s capital campaign is the perfect fit for us,” said Mr. Stone. “We’ve had long-standing relationships with youth organizations like Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA, and now we can help build this new hospital for children in our community.”

Jerry echoed Jim’s sentiments: “Banner Health is a great organization, and we’re so proud to be involved with a project of this magnitude. Knowing that a brand-new hospital will be built just for kids is truly rewarding for me, the team at Swift Charities for Children, and those in the community whose donations make this gift possible.”

Swift Charities for Children Helps at Annual Back to School Shopping Event

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix is in the process of constructing three new Clubhouses in the Valley. In Glendale, the Swift Kids Clubhouse effort spearheaded by Jerry Moyes has received approval on its building permits and will begin construction shortly.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix provides quality after-school programs and life-changing opportunities to some of our Valley’s most deserving youth. Last year, 31,600 youth benefited from the programs and services that the Club provides through its ten Clubhouses, Dental Clinic and outreach services.

Each year the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix hosts a volunteer driven event to help the children in need from each of their clubs  receive special help to return to school. This night of shopping and fun is called The Back to School Shopping event.  Each pair of volunteers donates money for the evening and is partnered with an underprivileged Boys and Girls Clubs member to take back to school shopping.

Eight volunteers from Swift Charities for Children participated in the event which helped 101 kids receive clothing and school supplies for the school year.  Thanks to the generous support of the shops in Paradise Valley Mall, shoppers were truly able to make each dollar count and ensure that all of the child’s needs for the new school year were met. This is always a fun and rewarding event for all involved.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix will be opening three new Clubhouses next year, including the Swift Kids Clubhouse, in order to face the Valley’s growth and to provide services to thousands of youth who currently do not have access to these life-changing programs.

West Valley: YMCA

Swift Charities for Children donates $100,000 at YMCA’s Jeans to Jewels Event

The Valley of the Sun YMCA’s recently held their annual Jeans to Jewels dinner in the Moyes Family Gym at their Glendale/ Peoria facility. Swift Charities for Children was honored to present Tim Martin, Executive Director of The Valley of the Sun YMCA’s, with a check for $100,000 during the program. This check symbolized all of the hard work and dedication that the community has put into helping raise money for the YMCA and is part of a five year, $500,000.00 commitment that Swift Charities for Children has made to the YMCA.

The goal of the YMCA is to provide families with fun and fitness and this past year they have made one of their most amazing fitness dreams for children become a reality. A new era in family fitness has arrived with the opening of the Glendale, Peoria, and Deer Valley YMCA's Put Play in Your Day Youth and Family Development Center.

The Center features XRKade equipment that combines interactive video games, fitness, and fun. XRKade equipment in the center includes Dance Dance Revolution stations, Gamebikes that are powered by kids as they pedal, XR-Boards, which simulate skateboarding, XR-Row machines, which even simulate the sounds of a lake, a rock climbing treadmill, and 3-Kick and Makoto martial arts simulators.

The Center also offers several inflatables, including a 65 foot obstacle course, an 18 foot slide, a 5-in-one combo and many more. The inflatables have been very popular in the last year at the YMCA, providing kids with a low impact form of exercise that burns more calories than jogging, strengthens legs and thighs, helps kids improve coordination and balance, and also helps kids develop confidence and socialization skills as they play with others--all this and kids don't even think of it as exercise--they are just having fun.

The Put Play in Your Day Center has been become a reality thanks to the generous support of local charitable organizations. Created to get gamers off the couch and performing physical activity, the equipment fits right into the YMCA's efforts to combat youth obesity.

Good causes Valley wide are benefiting from your donations

Swift Charities for Children, in conjunction with the Phoenix Suns Charities, recently had the honor of making a donation of $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. This money was generated through a variety of efforts including a clothing drive held at US Airways Center earlier in the season. Swift Charities for Children was able to present the check during the first round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Another donation of $50,000 was made at an Arizona Diamondbacks game a few weeks later. Swift Charities for Children is very excited to have held a clothing drive with the Diamondbacks Charities onSunday, September 9, 2007, prior to the game against St. Louis.

This clothing drive and additional collaborations with Diamondbacks Charities allowed Swift Charities for Children to make a check presentation to the Diamondbacks Charities at Chase Field at the following D-backs home game on Monday, September 17, against the San Francisco Giants.

Deer Valley School District Partnership

Swift Charities for Children is proud to announce a new partnership for 2008 with the Deer Valley Unified School District. The Deer Valley district office has agreed to have a Swift Charities for Children clothing donation box placed at each of their schools, and in turn, SCC will be donating the proceeds from the collections received at these boxes to the Deer Valley School District. This is an exciting new collaboration and SCC is excited for the challenge and looking forward to helping the district.

Parent and community participation is vital to the success of this program. We are soliciting adult and children’s used clothing, shoes, purses, accessories, linens and bedding.

$1,000 will be given to each participating school. Funds will be donated to schools based on the amount of clothing collected. Each school is expected to receive $1,000 to be used as they see fit. Schools will create monthly challenges between grade levels or clubs with proceeds going to the winning unit. The clothing is weighed and reported by school site.

Special thanks to all of our partners who help us make such a positive impact in the community!
